Irene Gilliland, UT Tyler PhD Alumni, led students and faculty through China

BUILDING INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION AND CULTURAL SENSITIVITY THROUGH A STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE IN CHINA
Irene Gilliland (PhD, Tyler 2011) led a group of 30 students and five faculty members from the Feik School of Pharmacy and the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions of the University of Incarnate Word on a 14-day study abroad trip to China (May 15-29, 2012).

The trip was the culmination of a spring elective where students used blended learning techniques to engage in a variety of activities that promoted interdisciplinary education and cultural competency. Our time in China was a rare opportunity to experience China first-hand and observe the similarities and differences between our cultures, our health care practices, and our daily lives. Scheduled trips to health care facilities provided opportunities to view the roles of our professions in a different society.

Way to go, Irene!
